Windows 3.1x Installation Instructions
| | A personal computer (386 or higher processor recommended*) with 8MB of free hard-disk space |
| | 4MB memory (8MB or more recommended) |
| | A modem (14.4K baud or higher*) or a connection to a LAN (local area network) |
| * BITS recommends you have at least a 486 computer with 8MB memory and at least a 28.8 modem for the best access. Any thing less will not truly represent the service. | |
Configuring Microsoft Internet Explorer
For Windows 3.1x users B.I.T.S. will provide Microsoft Internet Explorer at no charge for you to access the World-Wide-Web and use your e-mail.
| A. | Insert Disk 1 into drive A or B. In program manager click File|Run then type a:setup. |
| B. | Follow the instructions on the screen. (Restart your computer when prompted). |
| C. | After you have restarted your computer, double click the icon named "Get on the Internet" in the Microsoft Internet Explorer. This will start the configuration process. |
| D. | At the Welcome screen Click Next. |
| E. | Choose "Manual" for setup option and click next. |
| F. | Choose "Connect using my phone line". |
| G. | Click next. When prompted, enter name of service provider (BITS). Click next. |
| H. | Enter area code and phone number and make sure "x" is NOT in box "bring up terminal window after dialing". Click next. |
| I. | Enter username and password. Click next. |
| J. | IP address: Mark "My service provider automatically assigns me one". Click next. |
| K. | DNS Server is the same as your DNS address. Enter: 206.31.242.5 Enter 204.70.25.234 as alternate DNS server, and click next. |
| L. | Internet Mail: Enter your e-mail address and mail server: as shown on configuration page. |
| M. | Click next. |
| N. | FINISHED!! Click Finish. |
| O. | You may be prompted to restart your computer. After it restarts, it may take a while for your system to update the system files. Don't be alarmed by this. It shouldn't take this long the next time you restart your computer. |
If you encounter problems making an Internet connection check all of the connections between your computer, modem, and telephone line. Make sure all elements have power. If problems persist, see "Troubleshooting" later in this section.
After you run the Internet Connection Wizard, you're ready to start browsing the Web! Just double-click the Internet icon on your desktop, or if the Explorer is already running, click any of the hyperlinks (pictures or underlined text that cause your mouse pointer to change into a hand) on the page.
| 1. | Before you can use Netscape Personal Edition, your modem must be installed and ready. |
| 2. | If you are using an external modem, make sure that the cables are connected, and that the modem is turned on. |
| 3. | Close all applications or programs. |
| 4. | Insert Disk 1 into your floppy drive. |
| 5. | At the Program Manager click File|Run. |
| 6. | Type a:\setup in the box and then click OK. |
| 7. | The install wizard appears. Follow the instructions in each of the screens that follow. |
| 8. | You're asked if you want to read the README file. This file contains late breaking information. We recommend that you read it. |
| 9. | After you install, use the Account Setup Wizard to configure Netscape Personal Edition: |
| 10. | Double-click the Account Setup Wizard icon in the Netscape folder. |
| 11. | The Account Setup Wizard appears. In each of the screens that follow, click help for more information. You can click Cancel at any time to exit, and any information you've entered will be discarded. |
| 12. | The Account Setup Wizard will ask whether you already have a service provider. Click "YES". Then click next. |
| 13. | The account setup wizard gathers information about the existing account, about you, and about your modem and phone line. For a table of the information you'll need check the configuration settings at the beginning of this book. |
| 14. | When you're done entering information, a congratulations screen appears. You can choose whether to immediately connect to the Internet and register your software, or do it later. |
| 15. | To Finish the Account Setup Wizard follow the instructions on the screen |
| 16. | When you're done, the Account Setup Wizard creates a connection to BITS and places it in your Netscape program group on your desktop. |
